Small Museums by Bike - Book Arts 5/26/2007

P5260070: Photo: Silk Book! Central Library, Rare Book Room. May's Small Museums by Bike Tour on the theme of book arts and fine print. Tour organized and led by Carye Bye (a perfect tour for a bicyclist, small museum director, and letterpress printer to lead!). Four cyclists and later a fifth went on this tour. (Ah Memorial day bbqs and campouts took away our usual size). First stop, Central Library to view the Extraordinary book bindings of the Englishman Philip Smith in the Collins Gallery. Jim Carmin, the special collections - rare book room curator walked us through each piece in the exhibit, and even opened up a few cases pulling the detailed incredible "paintings" of leather on each book. We were all very impressed. Next we went up the secret back staircase on the 2nd floor behind the journals that leads to the rare book room. We enjoyed another book artist show, and Jim showed us a few awesome books in the collection - even a book made of silk! Next up we biked over to the Independent Publishing Resource Center, where we bound and printed the cover of our very own book - a Pedalpalooza passport for the upcoming bike fun fest. Carye inked up the table top letterpress and let each person print their own. The final stop was the New American Art Union which was showing "By all Means - Artists Books & Objects" which was full of fine text based arts from some very talented - and dedicated artists. One of the main players in the show, Diane Jacobs, talked in detail about how she came to make each piece - she has a lot of patience and an abundance of cleverness! This tour gave is each a overview education in book arts - from the curator to the artist and to making art ourselves.
